Objects of "beauty"

Media: Human Hair, hair spray, wire.

I am exploring the issue of sexual identity in contemporary society. Drawing the relationship between the beautiful and grotesque. Working with the personal momento and evocative attributes hair holds I am re-presenting the private space where our physicality is exposed without judgement or self-conscious.

video work

Object of Desire # 2
Duration: 2mins 42secs

This video documents the simple act of a woman changing an earring. The footage has been completely distorted to suggest something else is happening. The suggested sexual imagery of this piece is a comment on contemporary culture where we dress a certain way to obtain a sexual partner. The use of the mirror effect is also intended to suggest a double meaning, what we see at is not always what we are looking at.

video work

Object of Desire # 1
Duration: 5min 28sec

This video is documentation of the act of dying my hair, and the washing out of the colour. The piece is an example of the processes women undergo when aiming to achieve their image of beauty. The effects on the film of mirroring add a different feel to the subject and the images come across slightly grotesque, sexual and undefinable. My work deals with identity issues in contemporary society and the way I feel individuality has been lost to a culture controlled by the media.

Just hello for now!!

Hey....

As a blog virgin I shall try to keep this as short and painless as possible! I will be using this as a platform to display my "work" until I have my website sorted.

That is all for now.

Laura!
